Wesley and Patrice decided rather than doing a day of events with family and friends with large florals and sparklers, they’d prefer to meet at the Howard County Courthouse to wed, and do portraits at Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. Our session started in the Bishop’s Garden, with the surreal backdop of greenery, and stone stairs leading to one of America’s most notable cathedrals.
Petrice and Wesley met almost 5 years ago while Petrice was in the area for her undergraduate degree from Morgan State University. Through the process, time and love took its course until Wesley surprised Petrice on the steps of the memorial at national mall. This is not only a beautiful love story, but also a magic unification of two realtors working hard to become the top earners in their industry.
Though it was a pretty warm day on the steps of the cathedral, it was important that time and reflection be the priority for a few minutes rather than Patrice and Wesley going through the formalities. After getting married at the courthouse, the couple decided to take some portraits at the National Cathedral. And with good reason – the Cathedral is not only beautiful, but it also has a lot of symbolic meaning. As a national landmark, it represents the power and strength of our nation. But for this couple, it also represented their own personal journey.
As Black Americans, they knew that their ancestors had been brought to this country against their will. And yet, here they were, standing in front of one of the most iconic symbols of American power and freedom. It was a powerful moment, and one that they wanted to capture in their wedding portraits.
The couple wore traditional wedding attire, with the bride in a stunning white gown and the groom in a sharp black suit. Against the backdrop of the Cathedral, they looked like royalty. But more than that, they looked happy – happy to be together, happy to be celebrating their love, and happy to be in such a beautiful place.
